Апстракт:
У раду се говори о планирању, организацији изградње и откривању споменика Жикици Јовановићу Шпанцу у Ваљеву. Анализирана архивска грађа и новински чланци допуњени су интервјуима са људима који су учествовали у догађајима. Испитана је идеја о подизању споменика, организација радова, припрема за свечану церемонију и откривање споменика. Приказане су идеје којима су се руководили политички функционери Ваљева и начин на које су те идеје реализоване. Кроз изградњу и откривање споменика анализиран је политички, културни и друштвени живот Ваљева у тренуцима када је оно било на врхунцу свог економског развитка.
